Vanderbilt's medical school becomes part of the university, beginning more than 150 years of training and research. Vanderbilt University Medical Center remains the region's largest single employer.
Dr. Thomas F. Frist Sr., Dr. Thomas F. Frist Jr. and Jack C. Massey found Hospital Corporation of America out of a single hospital. It became the largest hospital operator in the country, and, more consequentially for Nashville, the school that trained the operators who built everything after it.
The Nashville Health Care Council is founded to convene the industry's leadership. Its “Family Tree” now charts more than 750 companies, a map of who came from where, which is how this industry actually works.
The Council launches Council Fellows, founded by former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D., a curated class of senior healthcare executives convened each year to work on the industry's hardest problems. Larry Van Horn co-directed the program alongside Senator Frist for years.
Oracle commits to a riverfront campus in Nashville as its new global headquarters. Larry Ellison named the reason plainly: the city is the center of the industry the company cares most about. The world's largest enterprise software company chose Nashville to be closer to healthcare and become part of Nashville's healthcare ecosystem.
Generations of operators trained here, then founded or led healthcare companies of their own, many of which stayed in the region. Nashville continues to attract healthcare talent and startups.
